Also known as the Al Janadriyah Heritage and Cultural Festival, this event is considered to be one of the most important cultural events in Saudi Arabia and throughout the Middle East. It also happens to be one of their oldest events. It takes place in the middle of February of each year and goes on for two weeks. The festival is named for the village that it takes place in, Janadriyah, which is located on the outskirts of Riyadh.
People come from all over the country to attend this important event. Tourists are also encouraged to attend and there is a large focus on presentations that teach people about the region’s culture and people. The village itself is designed in such a way as to mimic the many different cultural regions in the country, each with its own architectural styles and hosting events that are specific to the way that area of the city is designed.
There are many exhibitions throughout the length of the event, showing off the history and traditions of the many cultural groups of Saudi Arabia. Just a few things one might see and experience consist of traditional sword dances, craft making, several marketplaces to buy souvenirs, dance, theater, poetry and a variety of other artistic and literary presentation. Regional foods are widely available and several feasts are held to enjoy them. There are also animal displays featuring cultural significant creatures like camels, falcons and Arabian horses.
These two weeks in February allow a visitor to take an in-depth journey into the world of Saudi Arabian culture, which can be one of the best ways to learn about its people as well as an exciting way to spend a vacation.
